Senior Research Engineer for Robot Learning

Permanent employee, Full-time · Berlin

The role
As a Senior Research Engineer at micropsi Industries, you will help develop the core technology that drives our groundbreaking machine-learning based robot control system, MIRAI. Together with the rest of our team, you will develop novel approaches at the intersection of neural networks, computer vision and robotics, and bring them all the way to real-world production.

Your interests and skills span from current research in the field of robot learning to practical software development. In other words, you’re not only fluent in navigating the research landscape, but you also know how to create production-ready, deep-learning models with common tools and libraries, and your experience in collaborating with others on larger software projects allows you to bring your ideas to our production codebase. We prize the habits of reading code, learning new things, asking for help and helping others out.

You will have the opportunity to collaborate closely with our entire team of software developers, mathematicians, robotics and machine-learning engineers, as well as our product designers and our industrial automation engineers, who will be using the results of your efforts in their daily work. Our team based in our Berlin office/robotics lab is friendly, motivated and international.
Responsibilities
  • Improve our core machine learning (ML) models and training pipeline: Make MIRAI faster, more sample-efficient and expand its capabilities
  • Help maintain and develop our machine learning codebase and associated in-house tooling
  • Contribute to the long-term evolution of this technology by staying current on the science, trying novel approaches, and joining the strategy discussion
  • Write clean, maintainable, and efficient Python code
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineers, product managers, and stakeholders, to define technical requirements and project goals
Minimum Requirements
  • Proven track record in creating and shipping deep learning models for computer vision applications, ideally in Tensorflow
  • Experience in solving spatial computer vision problems - applications where it matters where things are in space, as opposed to applications like 2D object detection
  • Great verbal and written communication skills in English – you are a thoughtful listener and a precise writer
  • Substantial practical software development experience - by this we mean roughly that you’re self-reliant in tools like git, bash, debuggers and profilers
  • Willingness to own ideas and code from initial prototypes to production: The definition of “done” for all of our projects is that it runs 24/7 in a real factory
  • Experience in robotics or 3D graphics or another field that leans heavily on geometry and spatial imagination
  • Related academic work - a brilliant single paper or M.Sc. thesis can count
  • A degree in computer science, OR in related fields, OR equivalent experience
Nice-to-Haves
  • Professional robotics experience
  • Experiencing deploying neural nets on hardware in the physical world
  • Substantial research record in robot learning or computer vision
Benefits
  • Thirty days of paid vacation
  • Generous remote-work policy and flexible schedule
  • Public transportation subsidy
  • Personal development budget for training
  • Discount on your Urban Sports Club membership
  • Support with visa application processes and relocation
  • Company pension plan (optional)
  • Discounts on products and services from Corporate Benefits
About us
Micropsi Industries is a robotics software company that brings artificial intelligence to robots. We make a product called MIRAI, a first-of-its-kind robot control system that, using machine learning, supplies industrial robots with the capacity to perceive their work environment and adapt to changing conditions. MIRAI can be used in manufacturing, lab automation, logistics, and other fields. Through MIRAI, Micropsi Industries enables automation where automation was previously not viable, making factories more productive, workspaces more ergonomic, and businesses more resilient.

Ours is a curious, friendly, no-nonsense team that relishes finding elegant solutions to tough problems, be they technical, mathematical, strategic, or design-related. We like to learn for the sake of learning. We put a premium on personal development.

Micropsi Industries comprises about 70 people, among them robotics engineers, software engineers, cognitive scientists, business developers, and designers. We are headquartered in Berlin, and we have an office in San Francisco. The company is backed by Metaplanet, Project A Ventures, Coparion, Vito Ventures, Merck Ventures, Vsquared Ventures, Ahren Innovation Capital, Amplifier, as well as a group of experienced business angels from Munich and Berlin. In 2022, Micropsi Industries received the Deep Tech Award for outstanding achievement.
